    From Colorado DMV website:

Does Colorado offer a military identifier for your driver's license or ID card?

Yes, you may request a military identifier and/or the word “VETERAN” to be added to your driver’s license or ID card. When applying, you must present:Valid military identification card (common access card)ORDD214

If adding the military identifier, you must choose between Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard or Navy. No additional fee is required to obtain the military identifier or veteran indicator. You may select the military identifier, veteran indicator or both to display on your license or ID card. The military identifier and veteran indicator do not extend to spouses or dependents.

Well, I'm a civvie, so I wouldn't know bits like that, but I DO know that there's no military base in Fort Collins, hence why I latched on to that bit :P

Now, if he says he was a space shuttle door gunner and was stationed at the secret spacecraft base that sits underneath DIA, you'd know he's the real deal!

If the guy had said "I was a Lance Corporal in a supply unit based out of Pendleton" You probably wouldn't have batted an eye...people are stupid.

You know I get stumbled when I get asked "where were you stationed?" because I was all over the place. Then they ask "what ya do?" and again I say I did many things. Started as an 0311, reenlisted to become a 0151 because I was newly married and tired of being in the bush M-F and deployed every 18 months. But the joke was on me because I got sucked into the battalion S3. Who knew that there were admin poges in the Bn S3?! Not me.

Then came the G3 Plans position. Once you get the Plans Chief stink on you it is hell trying to get out of the plans shop. I literally spent the next 15 years PCSing from G3 to G3, word of mouth endorsements from one OpsO to another kept me from doing anything else. I did manage to escape for 5 months as a PMI at the range, but that was short lived when someone recognized my name and I got sucked back to the Plans Shop. Finally finished as an 0511, MAGTF Plans Chief. We finally got our own MOS in 1994 (9919) then in 1997 it was redesignated 0511.

How in the hell do I explain all that in a casual conversation? Did I mention the 4 years I spent in 29 Palms as a 0151/3531 Driver?

The Stumps is the "Oasis of the High Desert" according the Welcome Aboard brochure my wife got from Family Services in LeJeune before we PCSed. When we arrived in town in the u-haul, she broke down and cried in the truck. I apologized and said it would only be for a couple of years. We finally left 4 1/2 years later. That green weenie seemed to have followed me, even out to the desert.

It is all the crack houses and seeing folks hauling in water that will make you think hard about turning around the first time you come in. It being a dry heat isn't very comforting when it is a 118 degrees in the shade.

Whether you were a box kicker, admin pogue, grunt or whatever MOS, you served. Good on ya.

When I was stationed at Williams AFB in Mesa, AZ everyone used to say that "dry heat" thing. Yeah? Well it's dry in an oven, too. I don't want to live there either.
