New barrel for the 930... Trouble in paradise

So I had gotten the 3 Gun bug (or so I thought) and bought a 22" JM Pro Spring of 2012. Is till want to try the 3gun thing... soon. I sent it back to Mossberg as the mag tube was galled on the outside of it. Of course they said that kind of damage was "normal" but they sent me another one 4-5 weeks later. I never practiced with it beyond 2-3 rounds of trap. I seamed to get a couple light strikes, but after a good cleaning, it was working normally.

Late last year I decided I really wanted to shoot some trap and skeet so I purchased a 28" barrel for it in Dec. I joined a trap league for this Spring. After 80 or so shells (second night of trap), it started doing the light strikes again. I cleaned it again before last weeks trap league shoot, like down to the nubs (as per JM himself). This included the piston and pulling the rings off with a trip to the sonic cleaner type of clean it. Within 20 rounds, light strikes started again. So by the end of 50 rounds, I had 4-5 light strikes. I was thinking it was needing the 10/22 XP hammer spring so I have one on order. Something wasn't sitting right with me so I pulled the barrel off and started comparing the 22" original to the 28" one I bought recently. When examining the bolt assy., it is terribly worn on the leading edge or the guide/groove channel. There is a pin that pokes in from the left side that looks like it guides the bolt assy. The new barrel protrudes in about .122" and the original is only .110".... Turns out the depth of the wear on the bolt assy is about .010".... I am pretty sure the bolt assy it hitting the pin, slowing it down and not going into battery, giving me the light strikes... I am super bummed right now. The barrel metal is likely harder than the bolt assy., causing this. The edge has to be catching on that pin, slowing the bolt down and is the most likely source of evil.









When looking close enough at the bolt groove, you can see the triangle indent of the pin's leading edge. Now I know I could have just filed the pin down and be done with it, but I may decide to sell this someday and I want it to be right; I'd know it was there and wouldn't feel right unless it was disclosed.

We'll see what happens with Mossberg. Barrel and bolt should be there tomorrow.

Your ejector on the new barrel is faulty. It's a screw-in part that's projecting into the bolt way.

Mossberg has been nothing but lazy and slow about fixing the design of their guns. I'd call customer service, get comfortable with waiting a while to get anything done, and be very persistent. Get the barrel fixed and get a new bolt body.

hahaha... ya, I only waited for 38 minutes this last time, so I consider myself lucky. I will measure the new barrel pin/ejector when I get it back.

Still trying to figure out how to get my 930SPX to reliably cycle Winchester Universal. Two trips back got me nothing but a messed-up finish. Running a brake cylinder hone helped some, but still 10%+ failure. Might drill gas holes soon.

I dont think many guns cycle winchester universal well. My FN SLP (22") occasionally fails to eject fully (the empty shell will get caught by the bolt while exiting the receiver) and I've quickly stopped using them for competition. The SLP has zero issues cycling anything else and runs like a champ, I love it.

Crappiest ammo made. It runs in some side by sides.

Mine cycles the 7/8oz B&P loads just fine. Even the Nobelsport Low noise/low recoil. I feel somewhat lucky now.

The worst part of this whole deal is I really do not have a shotgun to shoot for trap leagues until I get the parts back... I can borrow my kid's 11-87 but it has a plain (no rib) barrel... I cannot hit the broad side of a barn with it...

I mean, if you really needed to get back into action, you could grab the ejector with some channel locks, screw it in one+ turn, loctite it in place, and ignore the scrape on your bolt. But if you're under warranty or just persistent, you should be able to get them to fix it.
