    Nothing. I used to live in QC and would hike in the Adirondack all the time. It is a pretty rugged area, and you will cross the border many times on some trails. BUT on the other side of the border from NY to Quebec, you end up in the Kanawake reservation, and this is NOT a place you will want to be walking alone... The locals are not friendly and if you happen to stumble on one of their smuggling operation you will not be seen again.... Even the RCMP will not enter the reservation.

    If I was to cross illegaly I would choose vermont instead. Lots of dirt roads cross the border. Some farms in QC have the end of their property lines in VT....
