Shim scope mount

I'm going to change things up on my main hunting rifle a bit. I've always just ran a 250 yard zero and that has worked well for me, but I'm changing just for change sake.

I am going to send my scope to Leupold for a CDS dial and play with that. It's sort of like a turret, but a turret for dummies. It's calibrated to a specific round and in yardages as opposed to Minutes. Anyway I always run 180's in my .300 WM so I'm hoping it will work for me.

Currently I have two piece bases on my rifle but I was thinking about going to a one piece base just so I could shim it. From my interwebz reading I'm guessing I need some .020 shim stock that I just put between the receiver and mount? Should the shim be tapered to do this correctly? I've read about the redneck beer can shim and while that may work I'm not opposed to buying specific shim stock. I haven't seen anything available other than Brownells though. Anyone care to walk me through the procedure the correct way? Rifle is an A-Bolt.

FYI I'm shimming the scope for fun. Just to see if I can shoot at some distances that I can range. My hunting is almost always within 300 yards and will probably stay that way, but I thought it may be fun to sling some lead further without as much guesswork.

Anyway, any tricks or tips on shimming would be appreciated.

Just buy some Burris Signature Zee rings and use the inserts to elevate the rear of the scope. You can do a 20moa cant. No need to buy a 20moa base. I have also found that if you have to feed rounds from the top, a two piece base works better.

Also the custom turret will work well only in the conditions its calibrated for. If you change altitude, even density altitude, or temperature, your bullet drop will change. How much change depends on distance you'll be shooting/hunting.

If your scope is a 30mm i have a set of those Z rings, with inserts.
