Man dies trying to launch huge firework off his head in front of family
WALLED LAKE, MICHIGAN — A 47-year-old man died Sunday night after a large firework shell he was holding over his head exploded.
Police say alcohol was involved in the incident, which happened around 9 p.m. on the 1500 block of Quinif Drive.
The man was identified as Scott Jeffers. The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy and ruled his death to be an accident.
"We received a call about a medical emergency involving fireworks," Walled Lake Police Chief Paul Shakinas told the Detroit News. "We found a resident in the backyard with severe trauma to the back of his head. We were not able to revive him."
According to police, the accident happened in front of Jeffers' family. Police say Jeffers took a large mortar-type firework and tried to shoot it off his head.
The force of such a firework goes in both directions. It shot through his skull. A witness tried to save him with CPR, but he died at the scene.
"Alcohol was a factor in what happened. We are urging everyone to use caution when using fireworks. Fireworks and alcohol do not mix."Shakinas said.
