Just looking at the resource monitor, svchost.exe is what is accessing the hard drive the most. Firefox, Edge, and Avast seem to be chewing up the RAM. My wife tends to open up 30 tabs with 20 animations per page, then log off with them open, so the browsers are no real surprise. Avast does seem to be continuously busy, though, probably as a result of all the live tile stuff. The CPCU seems to be kept busy first by 'system' followed by Avast and the browsers.

Might be time to switch off Avast and go with Win Defender or something a little more ready for Win10.

Well, don't delete svchost.exe. That process is extremely important. It would not shock me if your antivirus is having some issues.

I do have a warning regarding the Edge browser and these forums. I have now lost 2 lengthy replies when attempting to post them.

Yeah, my understanding, limited though it may be, is that svchost is the executable umbrella under which Win10 executes all of the routines in it's library. I've interpreted it to mean that Win10 is a busy little monkey at system idle, at least a lot more busy than Win7. Might finally be hitting the wall of what my desktop box can handle.

svchost is many things, has been for many releases. Primarily the generic process that runs dll based services.

I just upgraded today-not seeing a big change so far but I just finished the whole thing a few minutes ago. Not being a computer person it may take me awhile.

    I'm digging it so far.

For those who reserved their copy but don't have the upgrade available, you can just go download it from Microsoft if you don't want to wait.

I went and installed all new chipset drivers after running the upgrade. Luckily my gigabyte board had Windows 10 compatible drivers with July release dates for all the embedded devices. I also had to reinstall my Nvidia drivers. Other than that, no issues.

I will have to say, the search thing is legitimately useful for finding the controls. Way better than trying to find and/or remember four submenus deep into what I am trying to do.
Wife finally commented on the noise level. Looks like I will be shutting down at night until the problem resolves itself or I buy quieter fans or a new computer.

This tool allows you to manually control fan speed: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

If your fan is flying due to the CPU load though, might not be the best idea to throttle it for noise. You can play around with it though. Your CPU should kill your computer if it gets too hot (it'll blue screen with a CPU watchdog error or something) to prevent damage to itself. You can monitor temps with that program as well.

    Shoot, can't believe I didn't post the link; http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10

I haven't noticed any major issues. My systems are also not exhibiting any extra load, but I was using Microsoft Security Essentials ("Defender" for Win8 and higher) for antivirus on Windows 7.

Well it seems there's a problem with compatibility with my built in microphone. From what I've been able to find on the internet it's a problem waiting for a fix from Windows.
