If it had happened in a hospital they probably wouldn't have been able to do much. From what I gather, he expired fairly quickly. I mean hell, he didn't last long enough to get to the back of the car he was sitting in... and it's not a very big car.
I highly doubt he thought he didn't need a doctor. Immediate response to trauma is something you don't delay.

Condolences to the family. Odd that it seems like this isn't published anywhere that I have found. You'd think the media would be all over it.

Investigate make sure it was a nd. I'm always worried about being robbed for my guns on the way in or out. Getting in or out of the car is where it would happen. Make sure the bullet matches his gun and if anything he had is missing.

After hitting an artery, there isn't much he (or a surgeon, even if one had been in the passenger seat) could have done. He probably passed out in less than 2 minutes and was gone within 5.

Edit: I should probably read the rest of the thread before posting...

We were driving by and saw the many Aurora PD and crime lab truck, and to my wife, I pretty much guessed the scenario.

Yes to all of it. And no.

Folks, I gave some insight into the events to dispel any rumours/speculation of suicide, homicide, or extreme (idiotic) negligence, as such things are unbecoming of one of the best men I've ever known.
At this point, on behalf of both the family and TFL, I ask that we refrain from further discussion about the incident.
    Thank you.

You never stated your positional 'insight' from the get-go. You never stated that you had actual knowledge about the event and your posts came across as speculation.

I am thankful for all that you have done in your service and your life. And I'm thankful you provided real knowledge on this incredibly unfortunate event.

But you should probably have a game plan when you first enter a thread as serious as this one if you want to control how it is discussed. And how it is ended.

A simple: 'I have personal contact with the deceased and the range' from the get-go would have probably been more than enough to kill the rest of the posts that followed yours. The majority of the guys around here aren't saints, but they are respectful. They'll yield to facts if they come from a members mouth.

Your cloak and dagger posts discussing this event have been worse for the discussion than what you said in your most recent.

And I'm sorry for your loss.

There's no way to say what you'll do when you go into shock.

Very sorry to hear about this.

This^^ Discussing something this serious w/out any disclosure took the thread off course, unnecessarily. Let alone putting something on line "hinting and walking " around the story before it made the media was uncalled for. If not a potential legal issue, had this been ruled anything other than an accident.
