Default Cost of a new septic system?

We lost the contract on the house in Elizabeth so we're still looking.

Anyone have an idea of the cost of a new septic system or install them? I'd really like to use someone from the forum if we go forward with this.

We looked at a property today that has two houses (we want to have my mom move into one of them), first house is a 3 bd modular that was built in 95', it has a 3 bedroom septic installed (1500 gallon and 2500 sq foot field). In 2008 they built the 2nd house which is quite a bit bigger (5bd 5bth) and hooked it up to the same septic. They have the inspection report from 2008 approving the septic for 4 bedrooms but nothing more.

My guess is that this septic that was built for the two people and smaller modular is not designed to handle 7 people and we would need to expand or install a new septic. There's plenty of land and the current septic is about 300' from the main house so I'd prefer to just install a 2nd septic system.

    Any thoughts or advice?

My guess is you'd only need to expand the leach field and possibly plan to have the tank pumped a little more frequently, but in all honesty, if everyone in the house hold understands the do's and don'ts of what to flush and what NOT to flush, the tank shouldn't need pumped very often because a healthy environment in the tank and it will take many years for it to fill with solids. SO, no cooking grease, oils, use only septic safe detergents for dishes and laundry, don't use the garbage disposal for anything, put those things in the trash instead, no coffee grinds, egg shells, woman hygiene products, etc. Septic systems aren't like city sewer systems, so just make sure everyone understands that and the tank should function just fine for many years without pumping.
The cost of a leech field can be all over the map for several reasons. Size, depth, types of soils encountered, etc.
I'll try to remember to check what our septic system cost us to install last year out there in Elizabeth.

Ours would have been approx $8000 if we had subbed out. We did ourselves for just over $3000.

    $1000 for excavation
    $1000 for tank
$1000 for infiltrators, piping, permits, inspections and some labor I hired to help.

Last fall I had two new septic systems installed to replace old ones at our mountain homes in NW Boulder County. They cost $20K each plus about $7K for survey and engineering work. The septics included permits, new tanks and fields. About $47K, not including my own 2+ years of tree cutting and slash hauling to make room for the new fields, and restoration/re seeding. Of course, this is in the very Rocky Mountains which required removal and hauling of pickup truck sized boulders and the increased gravel & soil hauling costs in the mountains. Large excavators were required. Glad that's done! Next, it's two new roof jobs....

Twenty years ago, the septic system on the home we built in Palisade ran $3400.
