I can't believe how he walked up, faced the two women while standing behind and to the side of the cameraman, pointed the gun for several seconds at the reporter, and neither woman noticed him.

Reporters train themselves to ignore everything outside the camera's view. Think of it as "active" condition white. Camera operators, same thing. It's all about the story and nothing else while the camera is on, ESPECIALLY for a live broadcast.

The interviewee? She was probably not used to being on camera and was incredibly nervous, with all the "perceptual narrowing" going on that we always talk about.

All in all, I'm not surprised at all that no one noticed.
