    Default Increasing speed drills

    Hello, I just got a shot timer so that I can have something to keep track of my times. What are some good drills to start with and some goals to strive for in regards to time?

    i have access to 6 plate racks and assorted 12 inch circular steel discs on swinging mounts

    F.A.S.T. drill and shoot for under 6 seconds.

    Also, try to be able to clear the plate rack in under 5 seconds at 7 yards, from a holster; assuming they are 8" plates and there are 6 of them.

    Edit: sub 6 seconds on the F.A.S.T. drill is a TALL order, but can be done and will give you a goal to strive for. At first, start by trying to complete it in under 10 seconds from holster. Clearing the plate rack should be easier.

    Find this drill very helpful. Bill Wilson's 5x5 Drill

    Purpose: Create a measurable quick to run and low round count skill drill that tests basic handgun proficiency and rapid fire pistol control.
    Equipment: Service pistol of 9mm caliber or larger, concealed carry suitable holster and ammunition with a power factor (bullet weight x velocity) of 125,000 or more. **Note, if you shoot this from concealment or in a specific gear, keep track of that for future reference and consistency.
    Target: One standard IDPA, 10 yards downrange
    Scoring: IDPA Limited Vickers, 25 shots total
    1. Count 25 shots on target (24 in the body and 1 in the head).
    2. Add .50 seconds for each hit in the “-1” area.
    3. Add 1.5 seconds for each hit in the “-3” area.
    4. Add 2.5 seconds for each hit off target (and SLAP yourself).
    Start Position: Hands at your sides facing target. No concealment garment necessary.
    Procedure:
    String 1: Draw and fire 5 shots freestyle (two hands)
    String 2: Draw and fire 5 shots strong hand only
    String 3: Draw and fire 5 shots freestyle (two hands), reload from slidelock and fire 5 more shots freestyle
    String 4: Draw and fire 4 shots to the body and 1 shot to the head freestyle
    Skill ranking (Bill Wilson’s Opinion)
    Grand Master: 15 seconds or less
    Master: 20 seconds or less
    Expert: 25 seconds or less
    Sharpshooter: 32 seconds or less
    Marksman: 41 seconds or less
    Novice: 50 seconds or less
    Not proficient enough to carry a handgun: Over 50 seconds

    FAST is the ideal drill for IDPA shooters because it is shot from concealment and has a slide lock reload. I know a few Experts and Masters who can shoot it under 5.0 seconds, but most shooters will struggle to break 7.0 seconds.

    El Presidente is a great USPSA drill, and many USPSA classifiers are a subtle variation of the original drill. Local shooters above B class run this under 6.0 seconds dropping a few points, but 10.0 second clean is a good initial goal. Most new shooters will find their split times between shots on the same target are much faster than their transition times between different targets. El prez is a great drill for building speed in your transitions between targets.

    For indoor shooting confined to one lane, 7 yard Bill Drills are great. Six shots from a draw into a USPSA A zone or 8" IDPA center in less than 2.0 seconds is the standard. A draw under 1.0 seconds and sub .20 second splits between shots will get it done. The better local shooters can do this on demand, but most folks will struggle to break 3.0 seconds clean. A good grip out of holster is critical for a strong Bill Drill.

    Use the par timer function and practice these drills in dry fire. You can build a lot of speed in your draw and reloads this way. In live fire, record all of the times for your draws, splits, reloads and transitions in these drills so you can see your progress in specific skills over time.
