Default Vehicle license renewal "taxable value" - where do they come up with this "stuff"?

Happened to look at the renewal for my beater pickup, a 96 F150 V6 2WD. "TX VAL" (taxable value?) listed as 12830. I might get 5K for it on a good day in a private sale.

ownership tax is only $3, most of if ($75.67) is the democrap-inflated license fee they've been using to get around tabor and pump up the general fund for their pet projects, but really?

Where do they come up with this assessment? Is there any way to appeal it, and would it do any good to get it reduced?

ETA - OK, so that was the "original sale price" of the vehicle, and the ownership tax is a prorated amount of that, capped at a minimum $3 after 10 years.

I have a 2001 Ranger and just renewed last week. $105 with emission test and next year without test it'll be $105 any way.

I used to put plates on brand new trucks back in Texas for about $45. And the roads are much better maintained.

Should have seen the look on my face the first time I went to get plates for a new truck in Colorado.

Yeah, I have 2 motorcycles renewals due this month, $48.77 each. For bikes that are pretty much used off road, and are 11 and 30 years old. They used to be about $17 each. Fuck you, Bill Ritter!

I've written something similar on a tag renewal check once, TFog.

Yup my little trailer was 40 or so last year. It gets used 3 times a year for landscaping cleanups etc. So about 15 bucks per use.

Have to get tags for my new (to me) Xterra at the end of the month, definitely not looking forward to seeing the price tag.
