Dude, I'm a federal employee. Our government certainly doesn't have the time, money, or organizational skills to do anything useful with all that data.

So the same agency that is so trustworthy that it is trying to rescind a reg 20 some years old, the subject of this post, that same agency should be trusted to follow the law and not keep a database on the surrendered FFL records of firearms purchases? Ok. If you say so. I certainly hope you gentlemen are right.

Only partially correct. They go into storage while the backlog is worked. Eventually they will be scanned and cataloged - eventually.

There is a thread here where I explained this in detail, along withe the very negligible costs involved.
What is my joy if all hands, even the unclean, can reach into it? What is my wisdom, if even the fools can dictate to me? What is my freedom, if all creatures, even the botched and impotent, are my masters? What is my life, if I am but to bow, to agree and to obey?

No. But the federal contractors do. IR&D galore with all sorts of data to mine.

When I sent my completed 4473's upon turning in my FFL 01, the BATF sent me a letter advising that those records will all be computerized. I did destroy all 4473's older than 20 years.
