Had the pleasure of taking the Thunder Beast Arms/Colorado Precision Rifle advanced class last week and thought I would share my experience.
The course was taught by Brian Whalen of CP Rifle who is also an instructor for TBAC. It was held just outside of Douglas WY on a private ranch on a couple thousand acres. It was a three day class with an emphasis on long range, high angle, and alternative shooting positions.
The instructor Brian is ex Army special forces sniper instructor. But more important he is a great teacher with a wealth of knowledge. He tends to keep his class sizes small so you get a LOT of individual instruction. He still enjoys shooting and it shows. We shot until sundown the first 2 days and until dinner on the last day.
The location is phenomenal. Targets were spread over the large ranch and could be engaged from multiple positions and angles. Ranges varied from 100 to 1970 yards. We shot uphill and downhill at angles up to 25 degrees. 25 degrees may not sound like much but looking down at 25 degrees is a LOT and more importantly adjusting elevation for 25 degrees is significant when shooting at distance.
We did some shooting prone but I really like the fact that many of the shooting positions required alternate positions pushing me out of my comfort zone. We practice ranging targets and simulated different types of stages found at different matches. All and all a fabulous learning experience and just a ton of fun. Darrin the landowner came along for a good portion of the class and took some video. If you are interested in Precsion Rifle training I highly recommend Brian Whalen of CP Rifle and Thunder Beast.
