    Default Moved CO to IL

Since we have not yet closed on our newest house in Illinois, I have NO permanent address as yet. Of course need a permanent address to get a newly required DL, vehicle title, registration, plates, FOID card and CCW. Went into a local "mom & pop" gun shop and told them that I am well aware of the necessary requirements and I am still waiting on a permanent address before I can possibly apply for the required firearm related papers but just have a simple question. Pulled my CO CCW out of my wallet and before I could tell him that I am well aware of the CO CCW is not honored/recognized in IL, I was kind shouted at telling me that my CCW doesn't mean a dang thing here in IL. I told him that I know that but how many of the required 18 hours of CCW preparation will my CO CCW account for.
The salesman did not know the answer but indicated only the CCW Instructor makes his own personal decision on how many hours the out of State CCW card will deduct from the IL requirement. Sounds like my getting an Illinois CCW may be a bit complicated. :-((

Getting good advice on just about anything in gun stores can be like playing dice.

Are there any alternative CCW instructors in the area? I understand that in IL, you are not even allowed to touch a gun in the store unless you provide them with your FOID card.

Same country, 1000 miles away, and in many ways you may as well be in another hemisphere.

Can you use a relative's address as a temporary until you find a home?

Well Chuck, we should have a permanent address in about two weeks so until then, I won't be messing around with my stash.
Yes, on the FOID card. Even at gunshows, the vendor (even the individual non-FFL seller) will not allow a firearm to be even touched until the prospective buyer displays a current/valid FOID. If the seller IS a non-FFL guy, he is required, by IL law, to keep the complete sale record for a minimum of ten years. Now Illinois probably does have some good points but I have yet to discover them.

This move is/was not my choice. My BOSS (Wife/Warden) thought this was necessary due to some health issues that I am in the middle of. Didn't care to have to transport my old carcass from Colorado to Illinois where our three offspring reside. So, I'll just have to make the best of living in unfriendly/enemy territory.

Family comes first! IMO, you did what any responsible husband and father would have done Bob.

    But you already knew that.

    +1

I moved out of IL (Southern, 20 miles East of St. Louis) in '95. I spend 2 tours at Scott AFB, living there 9 years over a 10 year span. The whole FOID situation was bad then, but it sounds as though it's gotten much worse. I still have to go through that area on my way to Western KY from time to time but should only have a couple move visits there before the ties are cut (moving possessions & selling my late in-laws home). I cringe every time I drive through IL as I always travel with a handgun. I don't miss living there one bit!

No less than 8 interstate highways that lead out of the state?

We can see how well those laws have helped violence in Chicago.
