For the longest Android was about user expandable memory, user swapable batteries & Apple wasn't. This was because users would have to buy a new phone every year or two. Once Android manufacturers realized that the vast majority of buyers didn't know/care they decided if you can't beat 'em...
Personally, I still don't buy a phone unless it has those two features and I try to preach the importance of both to people whenever it comes up but it usually falls on deaf ears.
