    Default WTF is this spider??

Found this thing in my backyard. Actually, it was hanging about 10 feet away from my roofline and about 10 feet away from the tree at the other end of its massive web. When it saw me, it scurried over to the tree. The web was very strong and could easily support the weight of the 6ft wooden trellis stake that I was using to take it down. It was only about 15 feet away from where I sleep at night...

    Any idea what it is?

Best photo I could get to show it's size (Fat part of it's body is about 3/4" across):

Maybe one of our resident arachnologists will be by shortly.

It's a creepy looking thing whatever it is.

    My vote is orb weaver.

Huge annoying webs but very beneficial if you have garden. We have a family in the back yard. They don't bother us until you walk through one of their webs.
