Reminded me of working the gate on a mid shift at Brooks AFB long ago. I had an old 80 something lady drive up with an officer's sticker on the windshield. I made a bad assumption and failed to salute. She politely handed me her retiree ID card - not required to do so at the time, and I quickly noticed she herself was a retired Colonel. Oopse. She just smiled, returned my salute and went on her way.
It was the crappy little teenage dependent officer's kids that pissed me off when I would salute the window sticker and they would just laugh and drive through, or the occasional officer's wife that would slow way down waiting for and expecting a salute. It was a small enough base that we learned who was who pretty quickly.
I understand officer's wives take their husband's rank more seriously and personally than enlisted. My three wives while enlisted couldn't have cared less.
