SuperBowl aftar report: Ok...Reading stories on the Super Bowl venues it was very apparent that San Fran locals did not want the Super Bowl in their city. We flew in Friday morning but were tired so we stayed away from downtown. Ate at a local seafood place and had a wonderful late lunch. Did some walking around close to the hotel and enjoyed the nice day. Ordered room service for dinner and got rested for going into the city Saturday.
Crowds were crushing. Raider Nation was out in full force. One would have thought they were playing. Lots of security with those scary assault rifles and bomb sniffing dogs. The men and women in uniform were really cool when you got a chance to make eye contact and give a nod or close enough to say some encouraging words. Super Bowl city was one part of down town and the NFL experience was over a mile away in another part. Had long lines getting into Super Bowl city. Hour or longer waits to get into any of the sponsor attractions. Could not even get into the pep rally for my own team. We hoofed it up to NFL experience and the lines there were even longer. We ended up going over to the store to purchase a couple of items. I was hoping to find some unique item only sold during that week. For the most part everyone was in good spirits but we had to walk past all of the human debris that locals put up with. They tried cleaning up but it still stunk like piss.
We took an uber to a local restaurant for dinner my neighbor recommended. The Refuge has some of the best pastrami I have ever had and a wide assortment of Belgium beers. I had a Kwak and it was sweet almost like a mead. Very tasty. The location reminded me of Gaylord street in Denver with small and unique restaurants.
Super Bowl Sunday. Great weather for a game. We were on the first shuttle over hoping to score tickets to our own team tailgate party. Unfortunately most of those went to people who purchased flight and hotel packages with and without game tickets. We did our own flight and hotel arrangements and individual tickets for the tailgate party never went for sale again all week. Bronco fans outnumbered Panther fans and it was almost like a home game for us. Big security perimeter around the stadium which meant more walking. They parked us over a mile away. Again security staff were cool. I spoke with one niner fan who went to the game and he stated the fan base hates the new stadium. Just not the same. I think we felt the same way moving from Mile High to "insert corporate sponsor name" at Mile High. The club level seats puts a different person in those seats and crowd noise can be affected if they are not into the game.
Our crowd noise was much louder in person versus when I watch the game on Monday. CBS seems to have set crowd volume levels the same for both teams. Half time.....yawn. Great finish and we barely had time to watch the beginning of the award ceremony. The last buses were leaving exactly one hour after the last whistle of the game. We had to hustle to make the buses but made it.
So...bucket list item for a football fan. Got some quality time with the wife as well. Weather was excellent for our whole time there. Never a hint of rain which is especially rare for this time in San Fran. Our team won. A great way to spend our 30th year married together.
May never happen again that I am able to go but would think long and hard if I would ever do it again. Nothing special ever given to us season ticket holders other than first right to purchase a ticket. I was hoping for one trinket other than my ticket they may give or allow for purchase. The NFL is trying to appeal and expand their fan base but I may be one that gives up on them and enjoy from afar. I still purchase season tickets because I never have a problem selling them. May change if the Broncos have some loosing seasons.
