    You answered your own question.
What is my joy if all hands, even the unclean, can reach into it? What is my wisdom, if even the fools can dictate to me? What is my freedom, if all creatures, even the botched and impotent, are my masters? What is my life, if I am but to bow, to agree and to obey?

Just so you know. Once he's underway, and hits a port. There's plenty of places he will be able to buy knives, some of them really nice. . Unless he's on a bird cage, then they only get to see land, from a few miles out.

It's been many years since I was last deployed on a ship, but I don't imagine a pocket knife would be a problem. A fixed blade knife or a folder over 3.25" might be more of an issue, as it may be seen as a personal weapon. But my parents sent me a Leatherman back in the day with any problems. Just don't send chocolate. It doesn't fair well in the heat and humidity and becomes all chalky white after spending two months trying to catch up with them.

Hell, my Boy Scout knife was confiscated at the beginning of Basic Training as an unauthorized weapon...... Then two days later they issued me a bayonet..... The Military, go figure.....
