Default Words of advice you've passed on

Many of us have been on the receiving end of dad or perhaps a grandfather or uncle's words of advice. Well those of you with offspring what gems have you passed on?

The one that we still laugh about goes back many years when my boys were much younger (8 and 12. now 27 and 31). We observed a small group of "urban utes" gesturing, posturing, trying to keep up their pants and trying to look mean/intimidating. I quietly mentioned to my boys that they may be bad but they weren't bullet proof. The younger about peed his pants on that one.

It's a line we still drag out now and then just to get a good chuckle out of each other. There have been many, many more since but thought I'd get it started.

The one that stuck with me was when I was in my late teens and thought staying out all night partying was what I wanted to do.

He told me "nothing good ever happens after midnight."

I thought the old man didn't know what he was talking about. Now that I'm a bit older and wiser, I realize there is a lot of truth in those words.

I passed that advice on to my step kids when they were in their late teens as well.

You don't get what you want, you get what you work for. It was true then and especially true now.

My parent's (dad and step mom) were always going on about sweat equity since the early 90's. I saved when others were spending and when the market tanked, I sweat equitied the hell outta things.

Even before that dad said "there's no such thing as a poor plumber". I've met many in the field that prove him wrong through life decisions, but it turned out well for me.
