    Default Quietest .22 air rifle?

I just realized we don't have an air rifle sub-forum.

I want to buy one of the integrally suppressed air rifles for my dad for Christmas. He lives back east and has lots of nibbling critters in his garden. It needs to be in the < $200 range. I'm guessing .22 is the answer to keep the pellet subsonic. He's in a neighborhood, hence the need for quiet. Considering the piece of junk he's using now, I'm guessing the accuracy of anything costing more than $35 will be much better than that to which he is accustomed.

There's one from Stoeger that's interesting.

Looks good to me. I've always loved shooting .22 air rifle. Squirrel kills are easy.

You might spend the 10 bucks and have them test the gun. A coupld of reviews on that gun suggest they had issues and returned the first ones they got. I have been looking at their website for quite some time (a year of more) and reading all the reviews on guns up to a few hundred but still haven't decided which one to go for

I have a Gamo Silent Stalker .22cal that's been super reliable and accurate. Running with hollow point lead, it's very quiet. It's a $300 rifle but if you shop around and watch out for deals, you can do better. I picked mine up for $205. Amazon has them now for $230.

My brother in law has this one and he says is shoots very well. The gas spring is better than just the standard spring.

If you go with a .22 air rifle with a gas piston power plant rather than a spring piston, and of course a built-in suppressor, it's pretty hard to go wrong. The gas piston doesn't make the loud SPROING sound that the spring does.

This, and that rifle also looks like a really nice setup/deal.

Nearly all these air rifles have questionable scope base mounts that should be properly checked out. I tightened mine up when I first got it and haven't had any issues. I know many others that have had problems.

I have the Stoeger you linked to and I can tell you it's very quiet! Trigger is crappy, I upgraded mine. It's accurate enough & quiet.

I'm running a .22 Benjamin Trail Nitro Piston 2. It can be found for $199. It has a real picatinny rail that provides a MUCH more solid scope mount. Many air rifles come with dumb little dovetails that don't hold up well to the abuse an air rifle gives scopes. I have seen many dovetail bases work themselves free after a couple dozen shots, even on more expensive air rifles. Dovetails simply aren't sufficient on high power 22 air rifles IMO.

The trigger on the Benjamin is pretty good. Not great, but good enough to shoot well. It is adjustable. It's not as quiet as some others I've heard, but quiet enough the neighbors can't hear it. And it has gotten quieter with use.

It's advertised as 1100fps with alloy pellets, but I haven't confirmed that. My chronograph results have been real close to a 760fps average with 14.66g lead round nose pellets.
