Reminds me of a sci-fi book The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven.

There was an alien race that could not control their population (biologically they had to mate or suffer a painful death) so they were a major threat to Earth (they needed our resources to feed their population)
Our scientists eventually found a way to control their breeding so we could co-exist.

Something tells me the same solution won't work on moose limbs
