Remington 700 with 5r in .308

I finally got my range membership and talked to a buddy about reloading some ammo. I have looked around online and see that it likes the 168 or 175gr bullets the best. My couple questions are 1. Have you had any experience with the 5r barrel, and if so, how did you like it? and 2. For longer ranges (500yrds for me) would the 175gr be better since it wont be pushed as much by windage, or will it not be that significant at that range? Thanks!

1) Yes. Great barrel.
2a) 168s at 500 work just fine.
2b) 175's at 500 work just fine.

Figure out what your gun likes and feed it that.

I've been told the bullet weight starts to matter at app 900 yds especially the 168 variety. I can't see that far so I use a lot of 168s.

I need some weather to stretch out my bushnell elite 6500 that I got from another member here, some Jim guy, but 900 yards is still a half mile.

Thanks for the input. I think I will try both and see what the gun likes. Sounds like I wont have to worry about wind pushing a bullet for a while since I'm just starting into long range.

900 yards can be more of a trans-sonic issue with one bullet over another, as opposed to wind. Although at 900 and over, a LOT of things make more of a difference! Some bullet profiles work better in the trans-sonic range than others.

My long range gun started as the Remy 5R. It's a great gun. I had great luck with the 175 SMK and the Hornady 178 A-Max as well. I've never shot the 168 so I can't speak to those. I'm sure that all three would be great.

If I recall (and it's be a while), the 168 dies somewhere around 800-900 yards. The long range bug can bite pretty hard. If you even think that you may want to shoot to 1000 yards some day, you might as well start with the 175's. I don't see any point in spending all the time and effort to find a good load for the 168's when you will could end up switching to the 175's in the future. I'm not bashing the 168 at all. I'm sure it will serve you well at 500 yards.

In my opinion, just start with the 175's. Good luck which ever direction you go. It's a blast.

Well I "bit the bullet" and went with 168gr Hornady match hpbt with CFE223 powder. I don't reload so I wont be working up a load yet, but I wanted to start off shooting something better than boxed ammo.

What stock you have it in? I'm looking at the B&C . Wondering if the magpul 700 hunter magwell, would go in with minimal in-letting on the stock?
