There have been a lot of seriously bad guys in real life that started out as whiney bitches too. Narcissism is a powerful motivator to try and shape the world as one sees it rather than respect that people have a right to live as they choose. We have people doing that right now even as they are objectively making things worse they believe they "are the ones we've been waiting for."

I was never a real Star Wars nerd, so maybe it's all just lost on me. But I saw the newest venture, and it was the same as before; bad acting, rushed plot and character development, weak exposition, MacGuffins, emotional inconsistencies, the list goes on.

At least it wasn't all CGI and light saber dancing.
Agreed on there at least not being any dancing. I think that while it looked cool in II/III, it was too much of a departure from the now snail-paced fighting of the original trilogy.

Just got back from watching it, and I had been on a 100% media-blackout of it before I saw it, so I knew nothing going in. That said, I read A LOT of the star wars books when I was a young boy, and if they used some of the canon developed in those books, then Han & Leia's kids (I guess for this universe they only have 1, the evil kid) were good with the force, but Luke's kid was supposed to be a complete badass. So, if Rey (the girl) turns out to be Luke's daughter (and thus Leia's neice, which would explain their hug in commiseration of Han) then it could make sense that this chick picks up all the Jedi stuff quicker than Luke picked up the force as a teenager, and quicker still than his father Anakin picked up the force starting as a child.

I agree that they tried to cover too much, too fast. I *hate* the acting of Han's kid. Figures, because he's buds with lena dunham and starred with her in her show Girls (absolute s***). He's a whiney b**** in this movie, even worse than Anakin was in Ep. II & III. The First Order military commander is also a lame character. I get what they're trying to do with him, but it's stilted and does not come off well. His character had zerrooo development, and that's OK when it's a Grand Moff Tarkin or Admiral Piett who were awesome without having to do/say much and could just be a significant presence on screen, but this guy was given too much of a role/dialogue to let that slide.

If/When I have kids, I'm going to show Ep IV-VI to them and point out Leia, then I'm going to show them Ep VII and tell them: This is what drugs do. Don't be like Leia, don't do drugs.

On the other hand, I really like the pilot Poe's character. He's a badass, and look forward to him in Ep VIII. Finn is also a cool character who did not disappoint. I hope they avoid further anachronisms, as Finn was cutting it close. What I really like about the star wars films is that they use a timeless humor that is not too set in a specified time period. I think that Ep I-III, although not great movies, did well to avoid too much current-culture inclusion into the acting. It's tough to avoid, and I hope that they stay on the actors to keep it out of the movies.

Daisy Ridley (Rey, the new force-using main character) is perfect. I had to lookup her age and am glad she's 23, which means I am not too much of a creeper. Besides her being extremely easy on the eyes, she did a fantastic job playing the role and was very convincing, and she was amazingly never annoying, which I felt with nearly every other character at least once (Finn, Han, Leia constantly, Kylo). She'll do great in the next movies. Did I mention she's super, super cute?

    Just got done watching it.

    Over all a good movie...

The problem is the plot is 100% NOT ORIGINAL.

    - Stored data on a droid to be used to get an old Jedi out of retirement..
    - Rebel base faced with impending doom from a weapon planet.
    - Rebels conceive a plan in 90 seconds on how to destroy the weapon planet.
    - Rebels destroy the weapon planet with mere seconds left before impending base doom.

Everyone is saying Rey's father is probably Luke. There is a lot of evidence supporting it.

Just a theory and I'm thinking out loud here, but what about Galen Marek also known as "Starkiller" being her father. I'm not even sure if he was in any of the books or if its just a fantasy from some gamer company, but he's from the "Starwars Force Unleashed" Game series. It's about an apprentice of Vader that takes place between episodes 3 and 4. Basically this dude is a FUCKING BAD ASS that turns against Vader and joins the rebels! If you've ever played the game, this guy is WAY more powerful than Luke, Vader.... probably even Yoda...

Again, just thinking out loud and kinda hoping it could be true.. It would explain why she's so powerful with the force.

Here's a picture of the guy

We just got back from watching it...in 3D. This was my first 3D movie. I enjoyed it. Even my wife liked it and she doesn't like the series. It seems to me this was almost just a remake of the original for the most part, minus some history and new characters.

Yeah it has a lot of similarities with ANH, still the second best SW movie next to ESB. I thought the acting was top notch. I loved Rey (could she be any cuter?). Poe is a badass. I cant wait to see how Finns arc concludes, I believe he is force sensitive. Chewie was a total BADASS! Still wish he would have tore out a stormtroopers arms after Kylo killed Han.

I wish Han would have died in a blaze of glory but it was a fitting death for the man he became. Kylo Ren is a very interesting villian, it seems like his arc is the opposite of Luke and Vader, he is trying to fight the good in him and Luke and Vader were fighting the darkside in themselves. Why no Darth moniker though? He really reminded me of Jacen Solo/ Darth cadeus from the Yuzaahn Vong war. And wasn't Ben the name of Luke and Mara's kid? It's been years since I have read the NJO books.

Best part though, the Millennium fracking Falcon! Did the kessel run in 14 (12!) parsecs! The Falcon is my third fav next to Vader and Han. I'm gonna see this several times, it shares a bit with ANH but it IS it's own story. Thank you JJ for knocking it out! Too bad he is not directing the next one.

Thats not how the force works!

No doubt in my mind that Rey is Luke's kid. If you look at Kylo Ren he is just a kid, he throws temper tantrums. As for Rey or even Finn standing toe to toe with Kylo Ren, they didn't. Kylo Ren had taken a direct hit from a bowcaster, and was still standing. He was fighting through incredible pain and damage. Finn managed to hurt him more, then and only then did a fledgling Force user who happened to be very emotional and pissed off went ape shit on him. The fact she didn't kill him in that weakened state goes pretty far to his abilities especially since she definitely knew how to fight. Combine that with the fact he was trying not to kill her as he had it in his mind he could turn her etc.

Overall I liked the film, from watching two trailers I had already assumed that Han was going to die, the bad guy was either a Han/Leia child or Luke's kid and obviously the same for the protagonist. This is a fairly formulaic movie and the First Order is the embodiment of the original Empire on steroids, combine that with Abrams not wanting to get a horrible backlash as he did with the Star Trek franchise, I feel he did a remarkable job with the movie. This sets up the next two quite well, as long as they stop making big planet killing weapons the primary focus of the films.

No Darth moniker as he had not yet completed his training, that is my guess.

Just did a bit of google-fu, Ren is the title from a different Dark Side order other than the pure Sith.

In thinking about this again, it's painful to even hear the word "similarities". It's the same exact plot elements. And to top it off, the level of writing we get when differentiating what is now the 3rd movie in the franchise that has a planet killing planet is like this -

"Is it like the death star?"

"Oh, no. We wish it was like the death star. This one is a lot bigger".

    "Oh."

That's the level of writing here?

    "How do we kill it?"

"Well, we shoot it here, here and here."

    "Ok. Let's do that."
