    Default Truck gun?

So, somewhere shortly after the San Bernardino incident I heard or read that there was a potential plan to cause a traffic jam on a major interstate and then open fire on people as they sat in their vehicles.

Anyhow, it got me to thinking about keeping a rifle in the truck for just such an ocassion. It would suck to be 100 yards out from the shooters and taking heavy fire with only a handgun on one's person.

So, just conversation material mostly but it brought up a question or two.

What would be a good way to secure the rifle inside the vehicle yet still allow you fairly quick access to it?

Also, if the situation actually played out like I alluded to above and shooters were engaging you and other motorists and they were roughly 100 yards out, would it be feasible to take a clear shot to neutralize the threat if the opportunity presented itself or would there be too great of a risk of possible collateral damage to friendlys?

Feel free to discuss any other thoughts on the subject.

I've thought about securing the bottom half of a pelican case to the floor in the trunk and using padlocks to secure a cheap AR and half a dozen mags inside.

One of those things I keep putting off and one day I'll be like "son of a bitch I could really use an AR right now."

The scenario you described is something I thought of years ago and have wanted a longer gun in the car since. I think any pistol configuration should be able to get you out to 100 yards okay.

The situation is a potential nightmare though. 100 yards of potential victims between you and bad guy, and everyone is on the same elevation. Yikes.

The closest incident I can recall that would fit your scenario was the 1993 Langley, VA, CIA entry shooting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_s...A_Headquarters

IMO, the best weapon you would have in that type of situation would be the vehicle you are driving. Of course all situations are unique, but I personally would rather be in the vehicle and moving rather than out of the vehicle shooting.

I agree with you but I also think you might have missed my point.

First, on the agreement part, I have always said the deadliest weapon I own is parked in my driveway. I have no other weapon capable of killing an entire family with a single blow.

The scenario I was referring to in my original post is one in which a traffic jam is intentionally coordinated. Imagine you're traveling down I-25 near down town when everything comes to a stop. You're in one of the center lanes. There are cars stopped in front and behind you about as far as you can see. You aren't going anywhere.

Now, maybe I can push a few vehicles out of my way by ramming them but I'll never push through a hundred cars and make an escape.

Imagine twenty to to thirty cars ahead of you three people step out of their vehicles with AK's and start indiscriminately firing shots into all of the stopped vehicles.

    Like I said, it's a hypothetical situation.

1 out of 27 dead in Vegas, I'd take my chances with a rifle/shotgun.

Yeah, the scenario is a total shit sandwich.

Fortunately, this is pretty much a hypothetical make believe situation since the odds of it happening and me being in it are slim to none.

As far as securing the rifle in the trunk, not everyone has that option. Some of us would have to find a way to secure them in the cab.

When I was growing up we just had our rifles on the gun rack in the back window. That won't work any more? (sarcasm)

Go watch i70 west and think about how easy it would be to take pot shots at people. A Chilean .308 Mauser has been a favorite TG. Along with a capable handgun to get to the rifle.

Understood. I like the scenario regardless of how unlikely it may be.

Given your scenario, escape and evade on foot, away from the threat, while using the vehicles as cover. The people most in danger are the ones closest to the threat. If I were in one of the unlucky vehicles closest to the attackers, then the handgun I am carrying will have to do. Three on one is bad odds regardless of the weapon choices, but as you said, it would be a bad day for all involved.

If I were to carry a vehicle weapon, it would be a shotgun and I would keep slug and buck onboard. My biggest concern with keeping a weapon in a vehicle is vehicles are too often the target of thieves. If they get my parked and unoccupied vehicle, I really rather not give them the added bonus of a gun.
