Adopting Barn Cats

I didn't even know this was possible, but we're on our way to the Quebec shelter to adopt a couple of semi-feral cats for our barn/shed (large, partially finished and heated as necessary) Fully vet checked, all shots, spayed and neutered and micro-chipped and there's no adoption fee. We will throw in a nice donation for them.

We have a massive vole problem around the buildings and I'm hoping a couple additional cats can help get the population under control.

Our house cat, who sneaks out every once in a while has brought back at least 25 bodies in 2 months and I've managed to trap about 10 in mouse traps, so there are a LOT of them.

EDIT, should read CATS not CASTS, although I wish a had a cast of Hollywood idiots patrolling for rodents.

my wife and I got two kittens( a year ago) from my families farm and although my wife keeps them in the house at night, they go out every day and do wonders at killing voles and mice. SO, I think you're on the right track in getting the critter problem under control.
It's been amazing watching them with all the snow on the ground. Amazing how they can hear and pin point the little suckers and pounce in the snow and come up with them.

Cats are Cats. They do their thing when they feel like it. "Feral" cats tend to be less people friendly then others. Good for you adopting them.

I didn't know it was possible either but it's a great idea. I always thought the ones that would never make house pets were put down.

We adopted one year's ago. She became a great house cat. Not worth a dang on the mouse hunting side, but we had a Tom cat who was death on four legs so it wasn't an issue. Good for you!

Our local shelter started doing that years ago. Very popular program.

I'll stick to JRTs for rodent problems. They're ALWAYS in the mood to kill something. Plus I won't need a cat.

Going well so far, I'm still stuck in Vegas without access to SHOT or the AVN awards but my wife said they're doing great and even though they had never been introduced, they're now sleeping together. It's really a cool program and we're looking forward to them getting out of the barn more.
