He scares the crap out of independents, and he's too abrasive to garner the undecided voters. If anything, he's bad for the GOP, but the average registered Republican can't see through his sales pitch. Remember, this guy's job for the last few decades has been to close big business deals, he's a salesman, and he knows how to sell.
I think Trump's real job for the last decade or more has been "reality TV star." And I'm with you, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I think Trump is "punking" the Republican party. He's analyzed the things people are saying, the anger of many in the party and he's throwing them the red meat that they want. I don't think he believes a word of it. Trump is all about Trump, first, last and always.

I think Trump is going to start sliding in the polls as people get more serious and when that happens it wouldn't surprise me if he jumped ship and ran as an independent. Yeah, he pledged not to but so what? If a career politician broke a promise like that he'd be finished as a politician. Trump, however, is no politician and he couldn't care less about what the party thinks.

Think about it: Trump as an independent would be perfect for Trump. He'd be able to say exactly what he wanted to say and he could count on having the news media at his door 24/7, giving him all the attention he craves. He couldn't win, but I don't have any reason to think he WANTS to win. Why would he? Being president is a tough job. Everybody wants a piece of your time and you have hardly any control over your own life. Being Trump, OTOH, means you get to do, and say, exactly what you want to do and say and never suffer any consequences for it.

Trump as an independent would also almost certainly throw the election to the democrats, whoever their candidate turns out to be. And since Trump has a long history of cozying up to democrats, he would probably be fine with that.

Trump isn't running for president. Trump is starring in a reality TV show called "Donald Trump Runs For President."
