Multiple factors:
1. We as a society/culture have gotten soft and candy-ass and unable to deal with "stress". The pioneers would have laughed at adults over 18 needing "safe zones".
2. Recent warm winters have made people even less used to coping with what should be normal weather.
3. The sensationalistic 24-hour news cycle means reporters gotta report something. Omnipresent cell phones and digital cameras mean everyone can share immediately so we're flooded with images of ... weather.
4. The fact the weather pattern stretches from North Carolina up past New York makes it a massive event that everyone can share. If their figures are right, 10% of the country's population is in blizzard conditions and over 25% are being affected by this weather pattern. There's not a lot that affects 25% of the country simultaneously.
5. Reporting on the weather means they don't have to report on Hillary's misdeeds.
... and yes, they're a bunch of candy asses who can't deal with the Real World.
