    Default What is it?

The owner thought it was lead. It isn't I don't think. It leaves gray on your hand like graphite, appears to have been painted white at one time. It is roughly 14 inches tall, 9.5 inches on the ends and 12 inches in the middle. Iit weighs right at 90 pounds. Any ideas? I have no idea, maybe a counterbalance or plug?Click image for larger version.

Is it a requirement to sniff immediately following a scratch?

I'm guessing it's aluminum. The white stuff you thought might be paint residue is most likely oxidation. Just a guess though.

I can scratch it with my thumbnail. Not very deep, but it does mark the surface.

See if you can determine its hardness.

I'm pretty sure it isn't lead. A piece of lead that size would weight somewhere around 450 pounds. Maybe it's aluminum? Could be somebody smelted some beer cans to make them easier to haul to the recycling place? A hunk of aluminum that size would weigh around 90 pounds ish.
