There was an old cartoon, Reboot, about beings that lived inside your computer. In one episode, Enzo (think about the equivalent of a 12-year-old boy) tells the System Clock that he wants to be 50% smarter than everyone. The clock asks if he wants to be smarter now, or later. He chooses now.

Shortly thereafter, he realizes: "I didn't make myself any smarter, I made everyone else DUMBER!"
