I would hope they would extend this to contractors, ID holder etc. I hate not being able to carry or even have it in my vehicle. But highly doubt they will. Probably active only "IF" (big if) they actually allow it at all.

From what I understand they have given approval for the base commander to allow (or not). It's not a blanket "allowed at all bases". My guess is there will be very very few commanders that will allow it.

The Air Force is doing this while the Navy is contemplating the removal of 'man' from all rates (Aircrewman, Fireman, etc). Looks like I made the switch at the right time lol.

[The Air Force said Wednesday installation commanders will be authorized to implement three programs that grant some service members the right to carry weapons, giving their bases additional security. The programs commanders may implement are the Unit Marshal, Security Forces Staff Arming, and Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act, the Air Force said in a release. The Air Force is focusing on new protocols following various mass shootings on installations, most recently, on a recruiting station and a Navy Reserve Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

“None of these programs gives the installation commander authorizations they didn’t already have the authorization to do,” Maj. Keith Quick, Air Force Security Forces Integrated Defense action officer, said in the release. “We are now formalizing it and telling them how they can use these types of programs more effectively.”

Quick said the service looked at active-shooter statistics across the country and many incidents “ended without police intervention because there was somebody there who had a concealed carry permit or somebody interdicted the active shooter.”

“These programs allow commanders the ability to arm additional trained airmen who could interdict before police arrive and are trained to stand down when police arrive,” he added.

TL;DR: This is nothing new, and the programs that can potentially allow it all suck. All the details about the 3 programs are available at the link above.

Also, (As Hoser said) unless they take a personal initiative, most AF members don't shoot much. On the bright side, I've met a surprising number of gun-friendly AF folks in my short time in service, both in CO and in CA.

I won't get excited about this until I, as a civilian, can go to a football game at the Air Force Academy while CCWing.
