At 18 1/2 years in I was almost kicked out on an MEB (Medical Evaluation Board). Thanks to my commander's letter to the Board, I was allowed to stay in long enough to retire ~ all this for sleep apnea which I'd had for many years before they ever decided that the "condition" and the military couldn't coexist. If they had booted me, I could have drawn partial medical retirement pay for 2 years before they would have re-evaluated me at which time I could have either come back to active duty for my remaining year and a half (if I met standards) or called it quits and received nothing more than a "Thanks".

glad things worked out well for you and they didn't try to give you the door.

Like I mentioned, I had a great Commander - he saw the value in keeping me around. He was one of the two best Commanders I had in my 20yrs. If he called me up today to come back to serve under him, I'd get my fat butt back in shape and do just that.
