Small plastic ammo can with hand gun inside, secured with a combo lock. WE keep ours under the seat in the storage box the vehicle has. Combo lock is closed. BUT.... Set on last digit, this way if needed a simple move has the can open. To the quick scan of someone. it appears locked. Which one can do buy a simple turn of the knob.
Mags or speed loaders other side of vehicle (storage area)
WE travel with a lever action ( 50 STATE LEGAL) in easy reach. Loaded But UNCHAMBERED. That sits in another rifle case, easy access. Also a shotgun 18" bbl, with retractable stock.
I carry a revolver, the spouse has her 26. Both are in ammo cans under the seat, speed loader and mag in very easy to reach storage area. We make 2 trips per year to CA and have been traveling this way for over a decade.
The Carbines have the bullet buttons installed with 10 round mags. Again CA legal.

HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART.
SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES
Nonconcealable firearms (shotguns and rifles) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 25400 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported
We follow to the letterTo date the JRC is NOT listed in the CADOJ assault weapons prohibited list. There's 2 of them in (as the law says) unlocked containers, 10 round mags , Unloaded / not in firearm
