Default Is this welder worth $100

An aquaintance has this welder and he said he'd sell it to me for $100. It's a year old and sells at Home Depot for about $325. He's moving and cleaning out the garage.

I am a total welding noob and would be doing Harry Homeowner stuff like exhaust repair and small projects (exhaust just fell off the Heep last night...good timing).

Jeeze, for $100 you can't go wrong! You could always flip it here or on Craigslist.

In all honesty, I wouldn't buy one for list price, but for $100 and for what you plan on using it for its not a bad deal. They are not meant to be used to build a trailer or any major projects, but for small repairs on stuff around the house and for a guy trying to learn it wouldn't be a bad buy. Keep in mind that this welder has a very short duty cycle ( I believe its around 30%) and it's not intended to weld thick plate or anything heavy duty. Like rondog said you can always try it out and flip it later.

Great entry level unit. Learn on it , then upgrade. I like a 110V unit for small jobs and portability . You want to do serious stuff, it's not something that will work, especially (as mentioned) with that duty cycle rating.

The duty cycle of welding machines is very simple. It is how many minutes out of 10 minutes you can weld. 20% duty cycle, you can weld 2 minutes and rest the machine for 8 minutes. 60% duty cycle, 6 minutes welding time out of 10 and so on.

I do most of my welding with a little Hobart mig welder. There are a few things this one wouldn't handle, but it is sure handy for all the other jobs. The price can't be beat.
