This is the blinding obvious, but I offer that too many of the average voters are just plain dumb and have short memories. Come October-November the whole discussion of gun-control and limitations on our 2A rights will be overshadowed by discussions on abortion and the economy. Both of the later are important, but any half-competent person elected to a position can bumble their way through a legislative session and come to some logical and legal conclusion on both those issues. Pro-gun issues need to be shepherded by people that not just empathize with gun owners, but are gun-owners themselves. This needs to be an issue on the campaign trail, and not just a secondary or afterthought.
