Idaho CWP: For Anyone Interested

I applied for my Idaho "Concealed Weapons Permit" (yes, it covers knives and other deadly weapons in addition to guns) on Feb 26. Easy process. Fill out one sheet, similar to a 4473, and turn it in to the sheriff's dept. I was the only one there so the lady reviewed everything and printed me. Photo is done when the permit is approved.

Today I received notice the permit was approved. Not bad. A little over two weeks and $64 total.

Idaho has a regular permit which is very easy to get. Show familiarity with a gun (through documentation such as a hunter safety card), fill out the app and pay the fee. The "Enhanced" permit requires an 8 hour class that includes shooting and it's good in a few more states. I just got the regular permit because I have a UT permit as well that covers all the other states the enhanced permit covers.

An Idaho permit (either one) also allows gun purchases without a NICS check. Walk in, pick out gun, fill out 4473, pay, leave. That's the best part.

Also today the Idaho senate passed a Constitutional Carry bill in committee. It's going to the full senate on Wed where it's likely to pass. It's kinda funny...you only need a permit to carry concealed in city/town limits as it is. So concealed carry without a permit is already legal in about 94% of the state.

Idaho also issues non-resident permits. Not sure on the process for that.

I was in Boise last week and was talking to a Boise PD Sgt and Lt. My take away from the conversation: Guns in Idaho are assumed to always be present, considered essential and that is a good thing. It was pretty refreshing to be in a state capitol where the police had this opinion.

That doesn't surprise me. Seems to generally be the norm with the chiefs and sheriff's in the state.

Constitutional carry has passed the house and senate and is on the way to the gov's desk for signature.

SB1389 signed by Gov Otter today. Becomes law on July 1st.
