Surprised that Utah is so low.

I'm not. 18 year old Mormons go on missions, they don't enlist in the military.
IOW first allegiance is to the church.
I met very, very few LDS in the military. In fact I'm pretty sure I served with more Jewish people than Mormon (in one unit - an MI brigade - our brigade Chaplain was a Rabbi.)

If you love your freedom, thank a veteran. If you love to party, thank the Beastie Boys. They fought for that right.
From the link:
“It’s sickening. Nobody should want to do something like that,” Korean War veteran Eddie Thomas told Fox 35. “Why destroy something for somebody that gave their lives?”
The monument, part of a memorial known as "Walk Through Time," honors U.S. service members who died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan after September 11th.
The damage likely took place early Sunday morning, investigators tell The Gainesville Sun. Jim Lynch, a member of the Alachua County Veterans Memorial Committee, told the newspaper it's tough to see how this could have been an accident.
Korean War veteran Terry Fitzpatrick said he felt "instant anger."
Officials say it'll cost them more than $2,000 to fix the monument in Veterans Memorial Park -- although they'd already planned a broader renovation.
Fitzpatrick said he had a message for the attacker or attackers: "You’re cowards. You definitely do not understand the history of this country."
Investigators say they're looking into it, but they don't believe security footage caught it.

Yeah, it's per capita so there are a couple factors. Utah is probably very low because it doesn't have a lot of military bases and doesn't get a lot of veteran retirees. California and New York are probably low because they are expensive places to go to after retiring/separating from the military and because they have high populations (diminishing the proportion per capita). Texas has a number of bases and is a popular "home of record" but is paler than it might be because it also has a huge population.
It would be worth catching someone doing that disgrace to our vets.
Conclusion: Vets prefer more isolated places, especially if they are colder (and generally more conservative). I would like to see the numbers that match the color gradient there (Colors show a nice relative scale, but it's hard to understand if this is actually a noteworthy graphic because for all we know, light blue might = .15% and dark blue might = .17%. If light blue = .1% and dark blue = 20%, then the DHS may as well add AK, MT, and ME to the list of potential domestic terrorists.
EDIT: I initially just looked at the posted pic, and didn't realize that the pic in the article was interactive. For total vets, it shows CA at .49% and AK at .99%, so there's your scale. I really should refrain from posting on the internet right after waking up.
Interesting. I know quite a few Mormon AF Officers (and they are all fantastic guys). Not a statistic, just anecdotal.

Change your key to post911,,Utah goes up.
But that's irrelevant. It's about some scumsuckingfuckturdbastage destroying a MEMORIAL honoring VETERANS
