Why I like a membership-only range like Whistling Pines. Not perfect, but much safer grade of shooter.

What I've been hit with behind the firing line I wouldn't define as "shrapnel". It's usually jacketing material that comes back toward the shooter after the lead bullet splatters against the trap. Most of it is usually closer to the floor height, so don't wear open toed sandals.

I've also been hit by bullet splatter outside with a group shooting steel targets, so it's not unique to indoor ranges. I've been nicked in the face a couple of times by it. It's one of the reasons we wear safety glasses, right?

Yes, a much better description than I used.

I just wanted to make clear that it was some type of bounce back/ricochet material that she was hit with as opposed to a direct shot or AD type of scenario.

This happened to me a few months ago. I was shooting steel plates outside and took a good chunk to the face. It actually went up under my safety glases and stuck under my eye. I had a pretty good cut on my nose and burn under my eye. Could have been real ugly without safety glasses. The worst part was everyone asking "what happened to your face?!"

Every single cowboy action match you shoot, you will get hit with lead. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it doesnt, sometimes it draws blood.

That private membership fee doesn't sting as bad now.

I've only been hit with hot brass. Sometimes down the back of my neck after my shirt caught it. Most of this happened at The Shootist. Not sure what was up w/ their stalls, but I usually observed ejected shells coming over the stall divider. The guy to my left coming at me and mine going to the guy on the right. Sometimes it bounces off before going over and that's usually when I start dancing.

I used to shoot at the Silver Bullet quite a bit. I used to get hit by some type of bounce back all the time. I don't know what it was that was hitting me for sure. Usually in the shins, it'd sting pretty good sometimes. I've never noticed it at other ranges.

His pic was taken in case he was lying to the police about where he was. Its not that complicated.

Joe Huffman described an interesting accident at this year's Boomershoot if you follow his blog. Muzzle brake strike sent a piece of bullet jacket into shooter's spotter's leg.
