Interesting old (homemade?) antique black powder pistol

One of the guys I work with gave me some photos of a gun that has been in his family for ages.

He doesn't know what caliber it is nor who the manufacturer is (it looks homemade to me) nor really anything else about it other than it was discovered in his grandmother's attic a decade or so ago (and he's in his 60s).

Thought someone here might have some insights on what the gun is or at least be entertained by the pics (the pics are kinda big).

It is an old boot pistol. There were a lot of makers, so it would be difficult to say who made it if the is no engraving. JJ Henry, M. Smith, HJ Hale are a few, but there are a lot more. Fairly common in early 1800s, unless it is by a really well known maker.

Looking at pics on the internet it looks most like the H.J. Hale ones ... but at the same time is different.
