AAC baffle problem??

Took the new AAC 7.62 SD out for a spin this weekend. First shot was so far off my zero I took the can off to check things out. I had a very minor end cap strike. The can didn't lose any material in the strike, but there was some bullet jacket that had been shaved. Checked the QD, installed correctly and tight. Inspected the inside of the can to see if I had a baffle strike. I didn't see any but I did see this...



At 12 oclock, it looks like the machining on the baffle wasn't completed. Has a sharp little point and the hole is out of round. Every baffle appears to look like this as far as I can tell.

I know nothing about AAC baffles, but that can't possibly be how they are designed, right? Am I wrong?

Wondering if these baffle inconsistencies caused my end cap strike.

Thoughts?

That is unfortunate and it looks like it got past quality control for sure. Since Remington took them over everything AAC related has suffered. I would get them on the phone tomorrow if possible and send pics to get it back for repair.

Now the being off zero isn't uncommon and the sd series is known for that. My sdn-6 out of the box new 5 years ago had a poi shift of nearly 2 feet at 100 yards.

My 762SD looks the same. I recently had the latch replaced, and had the wobble. With the wobble my accuracy was shit. After AAC fixed the latch and it tightens up great now. I have minimal POI shift with the can on.

Do you have the wobble? Where it locks in between the teeth?

Another thought here - AACs baffles on the inside are manufactured odd and angular due to the process they use, and yes, it's hard to tell from your picture, but they are likely normal.
If you have an end-cap issue, then you likely had a nick or a light baffle strike, but you can't really tell from the internals. If you have any issues or concerns, give them a call though.

It's not brand new tech, but I still love my sdn6 and take it out everytime I go. I know some had a POI shift, but mine has been pretty solid. But heck, who takes the darn thing off once it's on anyway?!?

Tim - 2 FEET??? That's nuts man. Wow, I hope they did something to fix that for you. That's not even remotely acceptable.

Thanks for the info guys. I did have a tiny bit of wiggle as I couldn't get the last tooth to sit. It's very close so I'm going to try the mod to see if that fixes the lockup. The wiggle could have been the cause of the end cap strike. I didn't initially expect that was the cause because the manual specifically says "a small amount of movement is acceptable as long as the ratchet does not override a tooth". Allowing any movement, even small, goes against every bit of commonsense feeling I had, but the instructions mentioned that so I went with it. Need to trust my gut feeling next time and ignore the manual.

My POI was about 2ft low. But the bullet did nick the end cap which explains that.

The baffle inconsistency is still concerning. It just doesn't look right to me. (EDIT: missed the links above. Many of those look the same as mine. If the factory says it's GTG, fair enough. However, the factory also said a little movement is GTG, so...)

I'm going to try the mod to get this thing to lockup tight and bring it back out for a test. If I still have issues, I'll get in contact with AAC customer service. Very glad to hear they have been responsive to other's issues.

Good luck trying to mod it yourself to save you the time and hassle of getting it repaired. I would still send it back if it was me because if everything is locked up tight and you had a strike then again I still think it got past quality control just like mine did. Like the boys mentioned that baffle shape is how they are made and is 1 reason these may have more of a poi shift than say a TBAC.

I sent mine back right away and could tell they replaced at least the initial blast baffle but suspect all were replaced. I didn't touch my scope from when the previous can was on and once returned it only had about a 2 inch poi shift but in a different direction. It was great for a while and just like a ton of others the locking collar stopped locking up. I fixed it to only have it fail again within 2 years. I now have it sitting around in the shop for folks to hold compared to other cans and I put it on a beater rifle when needed.
