Working on the farm in Palisade for a few days so I put out a hummingbird feeder today and was rewarded with a first-of-season male Black-chinned Hummingbird.

Our hummers are late this year, still no sign.

This video isn't mine but is worth watching. https://youtu.be/IILPd0btbtU

Is this an Asian Lady Beetle? It caught my eye today. I heard they bite, but I picked it up anyway. It doesn't really look it in the photos, but I'd say it was 50% larger than the common Lady Bug with which we are familiar. I thought it might be some tree killer or an otherwise invasive species, so I killed it just in case.

Walking through the forest near the house a while ago I noticed fresh moose tracks. Along the route were fine spatters of diffuse blood, not like from an open wound but more like from maternal bleeding. I followed tracks that went back and forth and found fresh deposits of pellets. Thinking I might spot an animal at 50 feet or 50 yards, I was shocked to find I walked to within 20 feet of a cow laying down and looking right at me. She was on the snow in a cool shady spot. I'm pretty sure she is preparing to give birth. Her ears were lowered but thankfully she didn't move. I took a quick snapshot and carefully backed away.

Best wishes for healthy twins, mama moose!

An image snagged from the Carcass Cam in Jamestown, of a bear scavenging on a deer apparently killed by a mountain lion in town.
