About 5 years ago I removed several hundred trees to install a new septic tank and leach field. We replanted in low grass and native flowers for hummingbirds. It's gotten better and this year it really was awesome. The hummers are active on the penstemons, agastache and many others. The red flower in the photo of the buck deer is Penstemon barbatus, a perpetual nectar machine. Not a minute goes by without the birds using and fighting over the flowers. While not native to north America my favorite to plant for the nectar lovers is Nicotiana Sylvestris.

Separately it's very showy in the landscape.

I've just one bird that decided to live in my yard this year, though I heard someone new fly through yesterday. :-)

Do you only grow it in the greenhouse? I know that people in the south plant Nicotiana or flowering tobacco for hummingbirds, and I've see it used around Phoenix and south Texas.

No. In the yard only.

Its considered an annual here in Colorado, however I have many varieties of plants (including these) that are several years old, die back to the ground & overwinter under peat. Im pretty fortunate to have some decent microclimates on my properties & I've nicknamed these areas my tri-annual beds.

They will overseed as well & grow quickly. If you want to try them I'll send you some seeds from my plants which have proven to be rather hardy.
