Maybe, but if he had it, his wife would likely be the one wearing it.

At the risk of armchair-quarterbacking, the guy's near fatal mistake was "going hunting" ... he should have holed up with the wife and the two of them killed anyone that came near the door to the bedroom.

I think another important issue here is making sure that you and your wife have a firearm close by. Lots of people just keep a pistol by their bedside but that doesnt help the person left in the room and this story would have be vastly different if his wife didn't have a gun too.

True or made up doesn't matter too much to me. It's presented as a true event and there are lessons that can be learned from it. I'd rather have things to think about from a made up scenario than a similar scenario that was true with me being the leading character.
