I've always known them as solifugids. I encounter them around the house and garage a few times every week, spring through fall. The cats will catch and kill them. Solifugids are often aggressive attacking their prey with quadra mandibles. Nasty critters, I don't like them. I don't even like squishing the darn things, but I do just to make sure they don't mutate into something larger than humans.
