I think Mythbusters did a show on this type of thing once. I think it's was with two .22lr revolvers. It took them a while to get things aligned perfectly, even while using lasers.
I think there is some old worn out .22's floating around. If you can THAT shot with a 45 I will be impressed.

Why not just get a pipe w/ the inner diameter of your fictitious criminal's pistol caliber and do so without shooting at a gun? or just draw a got on a piece of paper of X size and try to punch it clean
