I've definitely seen turkeys fly up into the trees, then you lose track of them quickly.

I've had more than one person tell me turkeys don't fly. Well, they sure as hell do. It's amazing to watch them take flight off the side of a hill and glide 2000' vertical ft or more to a valley floor.

They do in East TX. Wild turkeys fly quite well. Domesticated turkeys, not so much.

A lot fewer predators in the trees when you're trying to get some shuteye.

Yeah, they're way up there. It's hard to tell from the photo but they're up about 60 or 70 feet.

Turkeys roost at night and to get away from predators. So when you're trying to get close enough to take a shot, the whole flock will fly up into a tree and you lose them pretty quickly.

I have a friend up north of here who lives on about 35 acres. She had a large flock(?) of turkeys that took up roosting at night on her back deck railing and the edge of the roof of her house. Turkey shit everywhere in the morning. She'd run them off at night when they'd show up but they'd come back. Real PITA for her. I thought it was pretty funny...long as it wasn't my house!
