Default MO Deputy killed in vehicle crash

Deputy Sheriff Casey Shoemate was killed in a vehicle crash on Route Y, just north of Rabbit Hill Road, while responding to an emergency call.

He was attempting to pass a fire truck, which was responding to an unrelated call, when he collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. Deputy Shoemate was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was flown to a local hospital in serious condition.

Deputy Shoemate had served with the Miller County Sheriff's Office for one year.

    Tragic loss.

While many MO rural roads are wind-y and hilly which limit visibility and have no shoulder, this could have been avoided if the oncoming car had pulled to the side of the road as it should have done. Too often I see vehicles continue on their way without even slowing down as emergency vehicles approach.

    RIP Deputy Shoemate.
