I let you know. I have one down at the gunsmithing school getting the barrel cut down and crowned, receiver drilled and tapped for optics. I went for a 24" barrel length. I've read that a barrel length from 22" to 24"
is what you'll want to avoid energy loss.

It took a little disassembly and metal work on my part. I bought a nice
walnut stock from someone here who started one of these projects and it
looks great after a few coats of linseed oil followed up with a few coats of finishing paste wax. I'm very much looking forward to having this finished and shooting it. If you have one, you know how accurate they are in the original condition. I'm very hopeful that it translates into a great sporterized shooter.

I appreciate the offer. I most likely will buying one already finished. I am good at refininishing wood so that would be the most I will deal with. However your thoughts are helpful because most of the ones I have seen have been 16-20 inch barrels. If you seen any good deals out there let me know.

I was lucky to have bought one in the mid-nineties when they were $70. It was an excellent shooter and the platform for my project.

I still have a few left from that time and am really fond of them. I think they are great shooters and the 6.5 has really good ballistics.

I'm not sure where the 22" figure comes from. It might be true for store bought ammo. If you match the powder to the length it shouldn't be an issue.

A friend of mine has had a sporterized one for about 15 years and has gotten a few elk with it. It is incredibly accurate for what it cost.

Samco, one of the importers, had already sporterized ones for sale in the 90's. People liked those.

If you have one in really good condition in the original military condition, I'd check prices before chopping it.

I have several Swedes, including one 96 that I acquired in a trade that someone had sanded and varnished the stock on. It's been sanded so much that it has proud metal all over it plus it's non-matching, so it's getting turned into a hunting gun. After doing some research, I've decided that 24" is as much compromise as I want to do. The Swedes did 29" for a reason, so I figure I'll keep as much barrel as I can to retain velocity while making it handier for use.
