Anybody out whacking doves this morning?

Went out east on State land with my father and son opening morning. In years past the parcel I hunt there may be 3-10 other hunters any given opening morning on the 5.5k acres.
There were about 40 people out there this year. Could not hunt my regular spot so I found an area that looked promising. We all limited out by 10am. Not a collared dove in sight. All Mourning Dove.

Good to hear about Mourning doves. I only see about 10% here. Mostly Eurasian Collared/Ring neck.

Did finally get to slip out again yesterday afternoon with my wife's uncle.

His first time on a hunt. He moved here from NYC back in the 80's and has always been a city dweller.

He thought it was a whole lot of effort (afternoon walks rarely as productive as morning or evening) for the birds harvested, but admitted the time spent in the field was fun.

Since he seemed a little disappointed in the slow hunting action so we cooked up the birds last nite. He commented after dinner that we should go again, they were tasty enough to make another effort.

He had never seen his food go from field to table in his 88 yrs.

I think he is going to enjoy living in the country.

That sounds like fun. Never been dove hunting. Always assumed hunting anything in Colorado will be crowed with other hunters. Maybe I should try it.

Can you hunt in the Pawnee Grasslands? Are there birds out there?

I do not know of any restrictions that would disallow dove hunting on PNG. Should do a little research since fed land vs state. Follow the most restrictive regs.

Should be "some" dove there.

We prefer to hunt along/near boundaries of fallow fields and cultivated fields.

This is the first time in 16 years here that I have not been chasing elk on the dove opener and I realized how much fun I was missing. I was able to get out for a couple of days and did well. Look for fields with small looking sunflowers and trees for roosting as well as a little water. I was out east by brush on some private land but there are some public areas that should produce. My 8 month old lab accompanied me and I was pleased by his work.

Went out after some doves yesterday, only saw a couple and was using my black powder muzzle loading shotgun which I unfortunately didn't shoot a couple caps through after I cleaned it so has misfires on those birds.

it did not however have a misfire when a damn rattle snake scared the piss out of me! So now I'm looking to find out how to make the skin into a hat band or something cool

Regs are the regs. Landowner can and sometimes do have rules that must be followed as well. Usually related to area to be hunted and access/open/close gates etc.
