Take a look at UMB. I have had a nice relationship with them since 1993. They take care of my Mom etc.

I've had accounts with USBank since 1991 and they're the best of the big names easily. This crap where some banks try to charge people who bring in a check you gave them simply because they don't have an account with them is extortion. How is a check even considering an instrument of negotiation if, when taken into the actual bank it's drawn on, I have to pay a fee to get cash for it. How they are legally allowed to do this is beyond me.

I just called Wells to confirm they hadn't opened any secret accounts on me. The fraud was mostly in CA and all on the personal banking side (not business). All of my accounts were known and in good shape.

I stopped using their credit cards and now use a Citi 2% MC. It's pretty awesome. One of the strangest cc issues I've ever had was with Wells. And now they cancelled MCs which sucks for Sams Club.

The only reason I keep Wells around are the retail locations (been a customer since 1994 as Norwest). They really suck for savings (rates). Even tried to re-fi once and it was a joke (something like 1.5% higher than Bankrate offers with higher costs).

    Sams Club now accepts Visa.

I'll second this. I maintain just enough of a direct deposit with them that checking is free* and I rent a safe deposit box there too.

Otherwise I do most of my banking at, get this, Digital Credit Union (located in New England) -- for those who remember Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC/digital).

    * But USbank does pull a fast one with their "free" checking: They charge you the monthly checking fee, then reimburse you that amount -- IN THAT ORDER. So if your account is at zero (but not overdrawn) the monthly checking fee will overdraw you, they'll charge you a ton of fees for the overdraw, then they'll credit the monthly checking fee back, but you're still stuck with the overdrawn charges. Just how much that would run fortunately I've never found out.

I keep putting it off because I'm lazy but I really need to get my money moved to a Credit Union (we're thinking Ent) ... but that said, we've been with US Bank for several years and don't really have any complaints (other than its a bank and they changed FDIC rules a couple years back to where you don't own your deposits anymore to get us prepared for bail-ins and negative interest rates, but this is a problem with ANY bank).

Last year when we drove down to Santa Fe to buy our Honda, the folk at the local US Bank branch there treated me just as well as the ones up here in The Springs.

With modern internet based access, most small credit unions are much more widely accessible than they used to be.

My original checking account had none of this so that's why I keep it. I keep a zero balance on this particular account for years and never had an issue.

    This is new.

But Wells has already lost my CC business for that period where every time I wanted to go to Sams I had to hit an ATM first.
